Production Technology of Ginseng

Ginseng is a special plant with medicinal properties. Its root increases immunity. For thousands of years, ginseng has been used in China, Japan, and Korea as an antidote, energy source, diet, and tonic.

At the present time, it is a valuable plant all over the world. It is also widely used as a functional food in America and Europe. Considering the geo-natural features, the production of ginseng in Bangladesh is not normal. However, it can be produced anywhere in the world in a controlled environment, so its cultivation has started somewhere in Bangladesh. 

Origin:

The country whose name is pronounced with the word ginseng in Korea. Panax ginseng is a perennial plant species with fleshy roots of the Panax genus Araliaceae. It grows in cold climates in East Asia, especially in China, Korea, and Eastern Siberia. Its root is mainly used as a medicine. The word Panax comes from the Greek word Panacea, which means medicine for all diseases.

Importance of Ginseng:

It contains carbohydrates, nitrogenous compounds, fat-soluble substances, peptidoglycan called Panaxan, minerals, etc. Ginseng also contains phenolic compounds, which have strong antioxidant properties, polyacetylene which plays a role in the destruction of cancer cells. It works directly on the nervous system, such as concentration, memory, listening comprehension, imagination, learning, judgment, thinking, and decision making.

Soil:

The loamy soil is suitable for it’s cultivation. It is better to apply organic manure like dung before sowing this vegetable in the soil. That can be cultivated on the pot or in fields with controlled conditions. Soil should have a drainage facility. 

Temperature: 

Specific low temperatures are required for field cultivation in the field. As it has a long cultivation period,  maintaining a specific temperature is costly.

Shade :

It grows in shady places. So the pothouse is made of polythene sheets to provide shade. Soil should be covered with rice paddy.

Irrigation:

Subsequent irrigation should be provided to get the highest yield.  But concern should be made on a proper drainage system.

Pest and diseases for Ginseng:

Root rot is a common disease. Proper fungicide should apply to the root of it.

Harvesting: 

It takes 4-6 years to mature. After maturity, it can be harvested.

Beside Ginseng, Bamboo Cultivation is very profitable for the farmers.
